Woodworking Technique Explanation

The following carpentry techniques are essential for almost any carpentry project you will complete. From cutting to finishing, these techniques are the foundation of every woodworking project, from small projects like carving spoons to large ones like building cabinets.

milling

Milling is the process of making rough wood into geometrically accurate blocks. Milling begins with the joint, where you first flatten one face of the plate. Then, move to the planer so that the other side of the board is smooth. Finally, use a table saw to cut (or "tear") the remaining edge so that it is parallel to the other side. Milling prepares wood for joinery.

Joining together with the plane

Jointing is the process of flattening a surface and an edge as part of the milling process. In special cases, a joiner may also be used for tenoning, beveling and tapering.

Planing is a technique used to smooth and remove excess material from wood surfaces. A planer is used to smooth the wood to a uniform thickness after flattening a surface with a seam machine. Depending on the project, you can choose to paddle by hand or electric. Hand planers are quieter, easier to guide details, and produce less dust in the woodworking shop. Electric planers are ideal for quickly removing large amounts of material from the wood surface.

Sawing

saw bladesAlmost every woodworking project begins with the use of a saw to cut wood. There are many different types of saws used for different types of projects. Always wear safety glasses and respirators when using saws or fine particles. Earplugs or hearing protection are needed when using saws and loud devices. Stay focused and clear of any distractions when using equipment and tools.

Drilling and drilling

The drilling process creates a hole in the wood, and the drilling process removes material to enlarge the pre-existing hole. Attach the correct bit to your drill according to the required size and material. Drilling is done on a stationary drill press or using a handheld bit driver. The handheld drill bit is convenient, while the stationary drill press provides greater accuracy and power.

Routing

A router is a very versatile power tool that can be used hand-held or mounted on a table. Depending on the bit installed in the router, it can be used to add edge treatments, create grooves, follow patterns, and more. It's an expensive machine, perfect for smaller Spaces or just starting to build a woodshop.

Molding and moulding

Shaping is the technique of carving wood into a non-rectangular shape.

The molding is a strip of solid wood with a variety of decorative contours used to cover transitions between surfaces. You may have seen molding on the walls of old houses or antique closets. Carpenters also use steam to subtly create bends and curves in thin wood blocks.

Scroll

Rolling work is a process of creating decorative designs in wood using a rolling saw. You can cut complex shapes, such as letters, decorate decorative sculptures, or make decorative legs for furniture projects.

The lathe turning

Wood turning is the art of shaping wood into cylinders on a lathe. The Crucible's Woodturning course teaches you how to use a lathe to turn rough wood into mallets and bowls. In this course, you will learn the basics of turning, sharpening, wood selection, preparation, and finishing techniques(Click here for Kone Tools Wood lathe turning tools).

Veneer and laminate

Veneer is the art of decorating a solid piece of wood by gluing thin pieces to a surface. This technique is also used in tessellation. Lamination is the process of bonding layers of wood together using glue and pressure. These techniques are used to make skateboards. In the Cauldron's Youth Skate building, students can design and build their own custom skateboards with seven layers of hard maple veneers.

Carpentry techniques to improve efficiency

It's easier to polish

SandingBlock hand sanding woodwork may seem like a chore, but with special tools and quality sandpaper, you'll get a much better result than an electric sander. In addition, it's quieter, doesn't create dust clouds, and may go into places the electric sander can't reach.

Use sanding blocks for faster, more efficient results. It distributes the grinding pressure more evenly and maintains a flatter surface than just folding a piece of sandpaper. In addition, replace the sandpaper frequently.

Sand with wood grain, especially the last grains of sand. To remove deeper scratches and stains, when sanding for the first time, lean about 45º on the texture. Grit to remove all horizontal scratches before moving on to the next finer grit.

To sand painted surfaces, purchase anti-clogging sandpaper. Paint builds up more slowly than on standard sandpaper.

Avoid woodworking drywall screws

When twisting two pieces of wood together, use traditional wood screws on the drywall screws for better results.

Full length thread of drywall screw. Since the top thread tends to catch the first board it enters, this may slightly force the two pieces of wood apart as there are threads on both boards.

The top of the wood screw, on the other hand, has a smooth handle that does not clip the first board. This makes it easier to clamp the two pieces of wood together.

Another reason to avoid drywall screws: The hardened, brittle steel shafts of drywall screws often break during installation, especially when screwed into hardwood. Removing them from the finished material is nearly impossible, and removing them can damage the surface.

Know the moisture content of the wood

When building with wood, you must know the correct water content of each piece of wood.

Too dry and the finished product may expand or crack. Too wet and the final product may shrink or warp. No wonder experts say incorrect moisture causes 80 percent of woodworking problems.

This is why it is critical to understand the moisture content of each piece of wood before use. For example, if you plan to use two different kinds of wood for Mosaic work, you will need to know the moisture content of each type to keep your Mosaic glue joints intact.

A fail-safe way to avoid damaging the project is to use a hygrometer.

Measure with drawing square

Use drawing squares to make accurate measurements and mark layouts on the board faster and easier - available at any art supply store.

When you need accurate squares within 2 to 3 feet, drawing squares are more accurate than bulky drywall squares and eliminate the hassle of connecting carpenter squares. You can also find the Carbide burr sets here for Woodworking.
